Seattle Chocolate has been delivering smooth, PNW inspired satisfaction in every bite since 1991. That’s because to us, chocolate is more than an exquisite treat. It is also a way to connect, a gift, a salve. It’s one of life’s little pleasures to be shared.
We’ve been using honest ingredients to create premium chocolate that satisfies the cravings and passions of discerning chocolate lovers. And now we’re proud to be part of a larger movement to produce distinctive, memorable products from right here in the Pacific Northwest. A taste of Seattle Chocolate is like a sunny day in March with Mt. Rainier glowing in the distance. Like a bounty of summer fruit from the farmer’s market. Like a cozy evening in front of the fireplace while the rain trickles down the windows. Like an afternoon on the Ferry taking an adventure. Our small and mighty company is owned and led by CEO Jean Thompson, a seasoned and self-taught chocolatier. Our entire chocolate line is certified Kosher, and many varieties are also non GMO project verified, gluten-free and vegan. We have a deep commitment to giving back to our roots, while also supporting and donating to organizations that better the lives of American families, specifically those groups dedicated to abolishing hunger here in the U.S. In 2012, we created the jcoco brand with a focus on feeding hungry families, at its core. For each jcoco bar sold, we donate a serving of fresh healthy food to one of our four food bank partners. You can learn more about our philanthropic efforts and giving mission here.
We are passionate about cacao and the people and communities who grow it. Seattle Chocolate began using Rainforest Alliance Certified™ cocoa in our core line in April 2014. Rainforest Alliance certification is a long term, robust, and sustainable approach to addressing unjust labor practices, preserving and protecting the environment, and bettering the economic situation of cocoa farmers and their families. Today we have 37 bars that bear the Rainforest Alliance Certified™ cocoa seal, including our beloved San Juan Sea Salt truffle bar. Look for the frog logo on the back of all of our bars.
Tastes and flavors evolve naturally over time and we are always looking to create new and better flavors that celebrate cacao’s unique varietals and flavor profiles. In May 2018, Seattle Chocolate introduced a 72% Dark Origin chocolate bar from Nicaragua with 100% traceability and a distinct fruity and slightly acidic profile to our exacting specifications. For this bar we oversaw the pre and post harvest process from fermenting and drying to roasting and conching to pouring and molding and delivering to our customers.
At Seattle Chocolate, we are excited to collaborate with other innovators like Coffee Flour a coffee byproduct that is also a nutrient-dense new super-ingredient. Loaded with fiber, protein, potassium and iron, Coffee Flour lends deep fruit notes to chocolate adding character and depth of flavor to our Coffee Fruit & Espresso bar. For farmers and families in coffee growing countries, Coffee Flour creates sustainable jobs and a new revenue source for some of the poorest areas of the world. For the environment, it will remove botanical waste, reducing methane gas emissions and minimizing pollution of streams and soil, strengthening the land and lives of the people and species there.
While creating great tasting chocolate is a love of ours, what's most important is the way that food connects us. And it's with that joy of breaking bread - or chocolate - together, that we've come to embrace a mission of donating 10 million servings of fresh food to American families. Built right into the jcoco brand and supported by our annual #chocolategives campaign, we've donated more than 2,600,000 servings to our food bank partners within the communities where we work: Northwest Harvest, Food Bank for New York City, and SF-Marin Food Bank.

Jean Thompson is many things: mother, marketer, entrepreneur, and chocolate lover. But the common thread in all parts of her life is her desire to learn more, innovate faster, and solve complex problems.
After success as a high-tech marketer in corporate Microsoft and raising two children, Jean's story with Seattle Chocolate began. She had no chocolate or business experience to pull from. But what she did have were two very important characteristics: a mind that is all about constant learning, and an ornery streak that kept her going even during more bleak times. Don’t tell Jean she isn’t up to a challenge; that just makes her want to prove you wrong. She transformed the company, and today Seattle Chocolate is growing and thriving.
After taking helm, Jean took to her role like a fish to water coming up with flavors, packaging and form factors that made Seattle Chocolate stand out. First off was the “melt-in-the-mouth” factor. She was looking for just the right mouth feel that is both satisfying and comforting, which all chocolate should be. When she found that perfect consistency, then she moved to outer appearance, introducing color and pattern and eclectic mix to the grocery shelves. And finally, she experimented with a number of flavors and additives, particularly ones from the Pacific Northwest, to bring authenticity to her bars, such as San Juan Sea Salt and Pike Place Espresso
A native New Englander, Jean graduated from Bates College before embarking on a career in high tech. Between software and chocolate, Jean was active raising two fabulous kids and devoting her free time to non-profit work. Jean has been profiled in More and Success magazine and has a chapter in Goddess Shift Women Leading for a Change. More recently, Jean has been recognized as one of the leading “Women of Influence” by Puget Sound Business Journal and named one of 2015’s “Most Enterprising Women of the Year.” Additionally, under her leadership, Seattle Chocolate Company was named Seattle Business’s 2015 “Washington Manufacturer of the Year.” Beyond success for Seattle Chocolate Company, Jean is passionate about furthering the chocolate industry as a whole, encouraging young women to enter the executive field, and fighting hunger in America by giving back to local communities. She also served on the National Confectioner’s Association (NCA) Board and on the Confectionery Foundation Board, the philanthropic arm of the trade organization. She also served as a member of the board of Entrepreneur's Organization Seattle chapter.
Jean continues her passion for giving back by serving as the Chairman of the board of Cancer Pathways, formerly Gilda’s Club Seattle.
From the unique and flavorful ingredients in our chocolate, to the fun and whimsical character of our wrappers, Seattle Chocolate is Pacific Northwest. We seek out local ingredients and work with local makers and purveyors, building a deeper connection to our surrounding community.
